Predicting Metacritic – Fable: The Journey

And so it was that The Great Wall of Embargoes came crashing down to shower the world with divisive professional opinions regarding last week’s highly-anticipated release of Resident Evil 6…yet Gamers Association was there ahead of time with a shockingly-precise prediction! Making a not-so-bold PlayStation platform assumption to our benefit (naturally), the final hallowed PS3 Metacritic score to rise from the ashes revealed an average of 77 — Only 2 points higher than our estimated collective 75! Fluid action with a ridiculous story, yet neither scary nor a true Resident Evil game? Yes, we be witches.

Picking up steam with the positive response from our supernatural powers, we’re at it again for another round of Predicting Metacritic! This week, the staff takes a stab at the ambitious, first-person, it’s-not-on-rails-really-I-promise Fable: The Journey, exclusively for Kinect on the Xbox 360.

The Target: Fable: The Journey

Alex Wen:

  • Compliments: Pretty game, awesome horses…
  • Complaints: Milking the series for all its worth.
  • Metacritic Score: 59

Jay Curtis:

  • Compliments: One of the best uses of Kinect yet.
  • Complaints: It’s still Kinect.
  • Metacritic Score: 72

Bret Devies:

  • Compliments: Errmagherrrd Ferrrble
  • Complaints: Not to be redundant, but on Kinect?  Srsly?  Would’ve benefited from an actual series installment instead of a gimmick.
  • Metacritic Score: 81
  • And Another Thing: While Fable: The Journey may end up as a good or even great game (we know they can put out quality installments), I think it’s noteworthy that the thing doesn’t have a target audience. Fable, as an RPG of sorts, has a target audience of hardcore gamers. It isn’t often picked up by people who play games for an hour or two of the week because it requires so much more investment than what a casual audience is seeking. On the flip side, those players tend to despise gimmicky add-ons like the Kinect, and something like this will likely alienate all but the most loyal of fans, all the while having little to no appeal to the unique Kinect audience. Because of the lack of an interested audience, I think the game will sell very poorly, although that doesn’t detract from its potential to be pretty damn good.

Nick Cane:

  • Compliments: I’m thinking it will get lauded for graphics, story and being one of the better Kinect games. Also hadoukens.
  • Complaints: Still a Kinect game, using a broken peripheral that shouldn’t have ever shipped. Buggy controls, redundant gameplay.
  • Metacritic Score: 67

Luke Frazier:

  • Compliments: Like the PlayStation Move’s Sorcery, Fable: The Journey hints at a far-flung future with the potential for engrossing and enjoyable motion-controlled gaming.
  • Complaints: We do not live in the far-flung future, and anything that doesn’t morph my Kinect into a minigame collection or dance machine will always be nothing more than mediocre.
  • Metacritic Score: 53

Gamers Association Aggregate: 66


Quite a spread in the individual scores this week with a wide range of nearly 30. However, it’s our average that truly matters. Will lightning strike twice to paint us as spectacular Seers? Check back on Tuesday when Fable: The Journey is finally released. Meanwhile, we’ll be busy buying crystal balls off of Amazon to build our new business pinpointing near-future video game review scores. Because, you know, that must be useful to someone, right?
