Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! Review

SmallOverview

Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! is a game I enjoyed very, very much. As I said in my previous piece on it, it is a true-blue Adventure Time foray, penned by Pendleton Ward and lovingly put together by Way Forward. So, if that’s what you came here to find out, I can give you a hearty confirmation. But for those of you still unsure, let’s talk.

Words Mightier Than Might

The most vital aspect of the transformation from show to game has been nailed: the writing. It is as fabulous and genuinely as funny as the world has come to expect. What else would you expect from the pedigree behind it? I would look forward to the next town segments just to get some more of that juicy writing. What else can I say? It is very well-written, and you knew it would be.

Pitch-Perfect Presentation

Besides the writing, the entire feel of the show is there. When you fire the game up, you get an adorable-yet-winking punk-lite song replete with amatuer harmonies and zooming synths. And once you begin, there is no compromise made regarding visual fidelity. The animations are silky smooth, the characters look as if every single pixel is perfectly in place. Regarding the 3D of the game, it’s fine and dandy but certainly wholly superfluous.

Back to the music, though. We’re talking soundtrack of the year stuff here. It’s both a distillation of the show’s themes and love letter to retro gaming. Some tracks have full-blown vocals while others would be a perfect fit in an 8-bit Mega Man, synthing along at impossible rates. It’s as varied as it gets, never giving you the same junk twice. Granted, the 3DS version (the one I played) has a few more tracks due to cartridge size. Did I mention you can stream it all right here? Listen to Party In The Clouds and try to not be pumped.

Color In The Lines

While the game is funny, charming, well-written and fantastically scored, it is also a good game. It takes the classic Legend of Zelda formula and cuts it in half, giving you about four and a half dungeons. It certainly works; not too shocking considering the choice source material. You get some stuff you can use to expand your reach to get more stuff to expand your reach. This rate of growth is implemented by so many games for a good reason.

You’ll get quest items and you’ll be able to get more hearts. It’s all really video game-y in a non-ironic, truthful way. However, this stringent-yet-neutered formula is both a boon and a pratfall.

Ooo Is Tooo Safe

The formula we talked about above also serves as the game’s largest hindrance. Hey Ice King sticks way to0 close for comfort to the dungeon-item-dungeon cycle. There is very little variation in the actual gameplay. One could say that this is a game for a younger audience, but that doesn’t fly with me. Because it’s not just the formula, it’s the lack of any lateral thinking. Games don’t have to be mentally tasking to present interesting options for gameplay.

Speaking of too safe, the game is very easy. This I can understand, but should be noted by anyone who thinks they’re going to get into anything more taxing than … well, there isn’t a single challenge I can think of. Sorry, analogy failed. You get a lot of food and a ton of power-ups; you shouldn’t ever die.

Recap

And that’s really all I got. Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! is an absolutely wonderful entry to the expanding Adventure Time stable. It won’t convert anyone for its gameplay alone, but when it fires on all the right cylinders — with humor, music, gameplay and presentation — it’s one of the best times you can have.  And everyone loves Adventure Time, right?
